Gli stessi inglesi hanno stabilito nel tempo la dignità di una short history of English literature ridotta da un’opera più vasta dallo stesso autore o da altri per lui. Piuttosto, e controcorrente, la presente è una sintesi storiografica a una sola mano in un tempo in cui pare ormai consolidata, a maggior ragione per la letteratura inglese, la formula di una collezione di capitoli monografici a cura di vari. La ripercussione operativa di tutto ciò sullo storiografo della letteratura inglese è, per fare un esempio, che romanzieri come Rushdie, McEwan, Martin Amis e Ishiguro, drammaturghi come Stoppard o poeti come Heaney “riducono” già oggi – hanno già “ridotto” – perfino Shakespeare o Milton o Joyce. All’atto pratico alcuni altri fattori di rapido invecchiamento di ogni storia letteraria sono l’aumento quotidiano e inarrestabile della bibliografia critica, l’incessante evoluzione dei metodi e degli approcci (una fluidità che caratterizza la cultura di lingua inglese più di ogni altra) e la stessa, inesauribile entropia dell’opera letteraria che lievita nell’attrito con la diacronia.
Cosicché non solo il mio stesso ultimo capitolo, I contemporanei, tra non molto dovrà essere rititolato, e non solo un quattordicesimo andrà aggiunto, ma autori oggi viventi e attivi avranno scritto altre opere che modificheranno l’idea che ci eravamo fatta di loro, e appunto molti altri, oggi esordienti e perciò qui esclusi perché ancora in prudente “attesa di giudizio”, avranno ottenuto una loro definizione canonica o altri considerati oggi “minori” avranno acquisito la statura di “maggiori”. Ogni storia letteraria che si scrive ex novo è come un edificio abitativo che assolve più o meno bene le sue funzioni per un certo lasso di tempo, ma che lentamente risulta necessitare di un restyling, di un ammodernamento, soprattutto di un ampliamento per l’accertata, sopraggiunta ristrettezza degli spazi e l’aumento numerico dei componenti della famiglia.
